Supporting the Repair of Salisbury Cathedral Cloisters. Salisbury Cathedral’s Cloisters is the largest in England. In its 800-year history it has been used for gatherings, processions and even housing Dutch prisoners-of-war. Today the Cloisters has many uses and is an active part of Cathedral life, adjoining our Chapter House which contains Magna Carta. Our Refectory sits in the North Cloister arcade, looking out over the central courtyard which hosts wonderful works of art and beautiful cedar trees. The Cloisters is a place where all are free to wander and reflect. Salisbury is one of only 10 cathedrals to have an in-house team of skilled stonemasons who still use original medieval carving techniques to conserve the cathedral for future generations. They are now about to start work on the North Cloisters which are in urgent need of repair. The North Cloisters are made up of some of the most elaborately carved stones on the cathedral and are crafted from local Purbeck and Chilmark stone. Repairing and replacing stones in this area will ensure the beauty and integrity of the building are preserved. We are offering the exciting opportunity to sponsor a stone in the North Cloisters. By sponsoring a part of this treasured building, you will be helping to preserve and protect our precious heritage. The ‘Sponsor a Stone’ scheme at Salisbury Cathedral helps to continue this vital restoration work and gives a unique opportunity to leave your mark on the building. You can have up to four initials of your choice (J.A.W.D) carved on one of the replacement stones that the masons carve by hand, which will become a part of the uniquely beautiful masterpiece that is Salisbury Cathedral forever. We will be able to select the stone, location and visit in the future for a moment for quiet reflection. Having lived in Salisbury as a child, Dad was passionate about Salisbury Cathedral. It soon became one his favourite buildings to study and visit and we feel that as a retired Architect, this is a fitting tribute to him personally and professionally.
